Our Blog
Chester Energy and Policy started in 2017 as a blog before blossoming into a full consulting business. The goal of the blog originally was simple: answer interesting questions in the world of energy & sustainability that weren’t being answered elsewhere, tapping into energy data sets, expert interviews, and a unique lens.
Today, the blog section of Chester Energy and Policy seeks to continue that mission: answering interesting questions. If you have a question that you think is worth diving into for a blog post, reach out and let us know! .

What Illinois Taught Us About Carbon Capture and Public Trust
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is often discussed in terms of engineering, policy, and emissions reduction—but the success of any project also depends on something less technical and just as critical: public trust. In my work with Visage Energy on the Illinois Basin West Project, I helped develop a stakeholder engagement analysis focused on the questions, concerns, and pressure points most likely to shape how communities respond to CCS development, from safety and groundwater protection to land use, transparency, and long-term stewardship.
Can GIS reimagine the energy transition?
The transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy reality is a massive undertaking—and we all know by now that massive undertakings require a LOT of data.
So today on The GISt, we’re exploring how utilities and energy innovators are leveraging GIS to help integrate renewables into the existing grid to make it more diverse and more reliable.
The utility leader’s modern playbook for GIS
The Esri Utility Network is more than a technology upgrade. It’s a strategic leap forward that helps utilities transform asset modeling, improve data security, and enhance operational decision-making…while enabling real-time visibility and better data sharing across departments to solve problems with less friction and greater interconnection.
USEA Virtual Press Briefing: Is a New Golden Age for Nuclear Power Dawning?
There was already a feeling in the nuclear power industry that a great leap in the fortunes of the industry was at hand. But President Donald Trump has escalated those hopes with four executive orders.
The GISt: How GIS is determining the future of the grid
What’s on tap? A closer look at what kinds of utilities are leveraging GIS to its fullest capacity. An exploration of AI as a catalyst for global tech adoption. And the real rundown on the key players to know in GIS.

I’ve already outlined what DTECH means to the utility landscape, but as you can imagine, takeaways from the leading transmission and distribution event in the United States are as varied as they are deep. When you’re talking about a program that featured over 800 speakers and covered everything from grid network model management to the challenges keeping utility execs awake at night, the feedback is going to be as diverse as the tech itself. Having to also navigate a tradeshow floor with nearly 700 companies means you’re never going to be able to see it all, which makes it all the more important to get a sense of what caught other people’s attention.
