Our Blog
Chester Energy and Policy started in 2017 as a blog before blossoming into a full consulting business. The goal of the blog originally was simple: answer interesting questions in the world of energy & sustainability that weren’t being answered elsewhere, tapping into energy data sets, expert interviews, and a unique lens.
Today, the blog section of Chester Energy and Policy seeks to continue that mission: answering interesting questions. If you have a question that you think is worth diving into for a blog post, reach out and let us know! .

When the Industry Starts to Jam: A Day 3 DistribuTECH Recap
Energy Central’s ‘Day 3’ at DistribuTECH looked very different from the first two — and that was entirely by design.

Standing Room Only at DTech 2026: Day 1 Set the Tone
Well, that’s Day 1 at DTech 2026 in the books.
What stood out most today wasn’t a single headline announcement — it was the hunger to learn, experiment, and connect. The day felt like a prelude built out of high-energy micro-moments: pre-meetings and panel lines long enough to wrap down the hall, Energy Central on the stage at one of the day’s most packed panels, and a steady stream of conversations that turned technical topics into human stories. Our crew was everywhere—catching sessions, meeting with partners, and circling back to trade notes—because the real value of DTech is what happens between the sessions.
Keynotes are great, key relationships are better. Let’s really connect at DTech this year!
The utility industry is one that by its nature has its heavy hitters regionally spread out. Financial titans can meet on Wall Street, entertainment executives can always grab lunch with their peers in LA, and politicos have their epicenter in DC. But every single corner of the world needs energy, so we have leaders and devoted armies of experts in each of those nooks and crannies of the country ensuring the power comes on when customers flip the switch– regardless of time of day, extreme weather pattern, or what’s going on in the world.
Quarterbacks Retire, Playbooks Don’t: Saving Utility Know-How
When people talk about utilities’ biggest challenges, they usually point to technology: generation, grid reliability, modernization, clean energy.
But in nearly every conversation I’ve had with utility leaders lately, the issue they’re most concerned about isn’t technical at all.
It’s people.
Put simply, the needs of the future energy workforce are shifting. And that challenge is amplified by the fact that we’re facing a wave of retirements across the energy workforce. We’re in serious need of new talent at the exact same time some of our best and brightest are exiting stage right.
What Can Fill the #EnergyTwitter-Shaped Hole in our Industry?
When I was in my late 20s, I started to feel a bit stagnant in my day-to-day energy career and decided to jump into the blog-o-sphere. I loved assigning myself topics to learn about, doing back-of-the-envelope analysis, diving down rabbit holes of research, and publishing pieces that ranged from serious reports on V2G to timely posts on politics, lighthearted looks at the holidays, or the odd intersection of two of my hobbies (fantasy football x energy, of course).

I’ve already outlined what DTECH means to the utility landscape, but as you can imagine, takeaways from the leading transmission and distribution event in the United States are as varied as they are deep. When you’re talking about a program that featured over 800 speakers and covered everything from grid network model management to the challenges keeping utility execs awake at night, the feedback is going to be as diverse as the tech itself. Having to also navigate a tradeshow floor with nearly 700 companies means you’re never going to be able to see it all, which makes it all the more important to get a sense of what caught other people’s attention.
